Analysing Digipaks (Jewel Cases): 2

2: S&M - Metallica

Front:

This is a live album. Centre of the cover is an image of the live performance with the group front man in the middle revealing the mass orchestra behind him. The lighting at the concert is very dark with tints if red and purple. The title of the album is presented very cleverly. The 'S' is written to represent a backwards treble clef whilst the 'M' is presented in the Artist's signature font. The title its self if presented on top of a line of sheet music. This and the display of a treble clef double up to express the orchestral side to the hard rock album.

Back:

Depth of field is used in this image of a headset on top of a 'setlist'. The 'setlist' presents the track listing of the album but instead of using the lengthy titles of some songs instead they are labelled with one word instead (e.g 'Nothing Else Matters' to 'Nothing'). The low contrast grainy image itself is very unclear leaving us to study its content further. Unusual for a lot of albums, the credit block (including record label logo) is pushed to the bottom right corner whilst the barcode is left without any manipulations to the bottom left corner.

Interior:

The cover of the album's booklet reveals a closer up image of the orchestra's performance, this time with blue, red and yellow lighting tints. As for the CD itself there is a lot of writing. Below the Artist's name is programme timings similar to which you would typically see at an orchestra. The track listing is split into two - one half at the top right corner and the other at the bottom left corner of the CD. The break could represent the intermission labelled on the 'programme' at the bottom of the CD. As for the colours used on the CD, there is clear inspiration drawn from retro vinyl records - a worn effect has been used to add more influence from the orchestral genre of classical music.
